Another day, another way a mom gets bashed by the Internet for publicly breastfeeding. Karlesha Thurman recently graduated from California State University, Long Beach, and decided to breastfeed her daughter in a picture during college graduation. She proudly shared the photo on the Facebook group Black Women Do Breastfeed, and when the page shared it, the photo quickly went viral.
Karlesha explained on her Facebook profile:
“I found out I was pregnant my last year of college, had my daughter one week into my last semester, she was my motivation to keep going, so me receiving my BA was OUR moment, so glad I captured the moment and so glad you shared it with the world so thank you again.”
Lots of people shared in Karlesha’s joy and supported the new mom’s accomplishments, but since the picture shows a place to breastfeed that hasn’t really been seen before, it was met with lots of harsh backlash as well. Twitter and Facebook users commented that graduation was not the place to breastfeed, with one user tweeting, “That picture of the girl breastfeeding her baby at graduation was not ‘empowering’ at all.”
