Nigerian Military Arrests Boko Haram Kingpin Behind Abduction of Chibok Schoolgirls

The Nigerian special forces have arrested a Boko Haram Kingpin who masterminded the abduction of the over 234 Chibok schoolgirls and who has overseen a slew of terrorist attacks around Borno State, according to the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade.

The name of the Kingpin was given as Babuji Ya’ari–a businessman and one of the leaders of the many vigilante groups in the North East now known as civilian JTF. He used his membership of the vigilante group to act as a Boko Haram spy and co-ordinate attacks from within the civilian population.

Olukolade also said Ya’ari spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza, Idrissa Timta, who was killed by insurgents at Tesan Alade, along the Biu-Garkida Road on May 30, 2014.

“A terrorists’ intelligence cell headed by a businessman who participated actively in the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok has been busted by troops”, a statement from the Military spokesperson read in part.

“The man, Babuji Ya’ari, who is also a member of the Youth Vigilante Group, popularly known as Civilian JTF, which he uses as cover while remaining an active terrorist, also spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza.

“His main role in the group is to spy and gather information for the terrorist group.

“Babuji has been coordinating several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on Customs and military locations as well as the planting of IEDs in several locations in the town.”

Information extracted from Ya’ari was used to arrest other female members of the sect including one Hafsat Bako, who confessed that they were handed N10,000 each for every successful operation they carried out.
