Full address from Gov.Sanwolu to Lagosians on Updates on Coronavirus and Lockdown order

Full text of Mr Governors address to Lagosians Ninth Update on Coronavirus by the Lagos State Incident Commander, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Dear Lagosians,

 1. It has become imperative for me to address you again today, following the culmination of the second phase of the Lockdown on Lagos, Ogun and the FCT, and the Nationwide Address by President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday.

 2. It is now my duty to share a broader framework for the implementation of the President’s directives here in Lagos State.

 3. But before I do that, let me reiterate some of these directives, as outlined by the President in his address: a. There will be an overnight curfew from 8pm to 6am, except for essential services. This means that from the hours of 8pm to 6am we expect all Lagosians to stay in their homes.

 b. Furthermore, there is a ban on interstate travel at this time. This means that no persons will be allowed in or out of Lagos until further notice, except for those delivering essential goods and services. And by this, we mean food items, petroleum products, newspapers, and essential manufactured goods.

 c. According to the President, “Partial and controlled interstate movement of goods and services will be allowed for the movement of goods and services from producers to consumers.”

 4. Lagos State will be very strict in the implementation of this directive. As a first step, I am directing that vehicles carrying food and agricultural produce into Lagos from any part of the country cannot have more than 7 passengers on board. The same applies when these vehicles are leaving the state.

 5. We are compelled to issue this directive because we have in recent weeks seen attempts to conceal people in trucks and other vehicles carrying essential items, with the aim of sneaking them into or out of the State. MEDICAL UPDATE

 6. Dear Lagosians, before I fully outline the guidelines for the easing of the Lockdown in Lagos State, let me officially update you on the medical situation. Our State continues to be the epicentre of #COVID19 in Nigeria. The total number of confirmed cases in our State as at midnight April 28, 2020 is 844.

7. One Hundred and Forty-Three (143) persons have been treated and discharged, and I am pleased to announce that today alone, we are discharging 49 people, of whom there are 48 Nigerians and 1 Foreigner – a Greek national. Of these there are 28 females and 21 males. Sadly, we have lost 19 people, and we currently have 682 active cases.

 8. I have been on the phone with our medical personnel who contracted the Coronavirus; I spoke with all of them earlier today; and I am pleased to say that they are all doing very well and in very high spirits. We are all looking forward to their discharge very soon.

 9. Our medical workers will continue to be top priority for us at this time, and we will continue to make available all the resources they require, in terms of Hazard Allowances, Covid Allowances, Personal Protective Equipment, psycho-social support, and others.

 10. We are continuing our active case finding in communities across Lagos State. So far, we have covered over 1.5million households; and we are also continuing to scale-up our Isolation and Treatment capacity. The Isolation Center at Gbagada opens tomorrow, and we are currently working on building three additional Isolation Centers in the state.

 11. Also ongoing are our relief package distribution efforts, with the kind support of private organisations and civil society groups.

 12. We are encouraging businesses in Lagos to commence the production of face masks, as we roll out a new campaign to Mask Up Lagos. This is an opportunity for our people, especially the youth, to display their creativity and artistic flair, and project the cultural spirit of Lagos State to the world.

 13. I will now go on to share details of how the Presidential Directives on the gradual easing of the Lockdown in Lagos State will be implemented and enforced. PUBLIC SERVICE

 14. Our public officers in the entire unified public service from grade levels 1-12 are to remain and work from home; unless otherwise directed by their Accounting Officers.

PRESIDENT BUHARI ON THE CUMULATIVE NEW LOCKDOWN ORDER

NATIONWIDE BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT BUHARI ON THE CUMULATIVE LOCKDOWN ORDER OF LAGOS AND OGUN STATES AS WELL AS THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY ON COVID- 19 PANDEMIC AT THE STATE HOUSE, ABUJA MONDAY, 27th APRIL, 2020

Fellow Nigerians, I will start by commending you all for the resilience and patriotism that you have shown in our collective fight against the biggest health challenge of our generation. As at yesterday, 26th April 2020, some 3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded globally with about 900,000 recoveries. Unfortunately, some 200,000 people have passed away as a result of this pandemic.

The health systems and economies of many nations continue to struggle as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Nigeria continues to adapt to these new global realities on a daily basis. Today, I will present the facts as they are and explain our plans for the coming months fully aware that some key variables and assumptions may change in the coming days or weeks. Exactly two weeks ago, there were 323 confirmed cases in 20 States and the Federal Capital Territory. As at this morning, Nigeria had recorded 1,273 cases across 32 States and the FCT.

Unfortunately, this includes 40 deaths. I am using this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the families of all Nigerians that have lost their loved ones as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is our collective loss and we share your grief. Initial models predicted that Nigeria will record an estimated 2,000 confirmed cases in the first month after the index case. This means that despite the increase in the number of confirmed cases recorded in the past two weeks, the measures we have put in place thus far have yielded positive outcomes against the projections. The proportion of cases imported from other countries has reduced to only 19% of new cases, showing that our border closures yielded positive results. These are mostly fellow Nigerians returning through our land borders. We will continue to enforce land border arrival protocols as part of the containment strategy. Today, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has accredited 15 laboratories across the country with an aggregate capacity to undertake 2,500 tests per day across the country. Based on your feedback, Lagos State Government and the FCT with support from NCDC have established several sample collection centers.

Coronavirus: First patients injected in UK vaccine trial

The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford. Two volunteers were injected, the first of more than 800 people recruited for the study. Half will receive the Covid-19 vaccine, and half a control vaccine which protects against meningitis but not coronavirus.

The design of the trial means volunteers will not know which vaccine they are getting, though doctors will. Elisa Granato, one of the two who received the jab, told the BBC: "I'm a scientist, so I wanted to try to support the scientific process wherever I can." The vaccine was developed in under three months by a team at Oxford University. Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at the Jenner Institute, led the pre-clinical research. "Personally I have a high degree of confidence in this vaccine," she said. "Of course, we have to test it and get data from humans. We have to demonstrate it actually works and stops people getting infected with coronavirus before using the vaccine in the wider population." Prof Gilbert previously said she was "80% confident" the vaccine would work, but now prefers not to put a figure on it, saying simply she is "very optimistic" about its chances. So how does the vaccine work?

The vaccine is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus) from chimpanzees that has been modified so it cannot grow in humans. The Oxford team has already developed a vaccine against Mers, another type of coronavirus, using the same approach - and that had promising results in clinical trials. The only way the team will know if the Covid-19 vaccine works is by comparing the number of people who get infected with coronavirus in the months ahead from the two arms of the trial. That could be a problem if cases fall rapidly in the UK, because there may not be enough data. Prof Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, who is leading the trial, said:

"We're chasing the end of this current epidemic wave. If we don't catch that, we won't be able to tell whether the vaccine works in the next few months. But we do expect that there will be more cases in the future because this virus hasn't gone away." The vaccine researchers are prioritising the recruitment of local healthcare workers into the trial as they are more likely than others to be exposed to the virus. A larger trial, of about 5,000 volunteers, will start in the coming months and will have no age limit.

Coronavirus Vaccine is seen being Hawked on the Street in Kano

The Federal Government has warned Kano residents against buying drugs being sold as 'COVID-19 vaccines' in the state. Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed raised the alarm at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) in Abuja on Tuesday April 21, and he said the yellowish vaccines being sold in Kano have not been certified.

 Lai Mohammed said;

"The federal ministry of information and culture and its agencies have put up a public enlightenment and advocacy campaign to continue to reach Nigerians with information on how they can protect themselves and avoid contracting the disease. “This is necessary because in the absence of any vaccine or drug, non-pharmaceutical intervention remains the most effective way to contain the spread of the disease and protect Nigerians. “By the way, you must ignore the vaccine being hawked in Kano which is called COVID-19 vaccine. It’s yellow in colour. It is not certified by anybody; please don’t patronise the hawkers. “The campaign has, therefore, continued to focus on the need for the populace to adhere strictly to social distancing and mass gathering restrictions. Wear face masks and ensure good personal hygiene.”

£130billion bill for 'coronavirus from Germany to China

Germany sends China £130billion bill for 'coronavirus damages' – sparks fury in Beijing GERMANY has rattled China after joining the UK, France and the US in a rare attack, after Berlin called out Beijing's responsibility for the global pandemic and even issued a £130bn invoice.

Germany has sparked outrage in China after a major newspaper put together a £130bn invoice that Beijing "owes" Berlin following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Germany has followed France, the UK and the US in directing its coronavirus anger at China, where the virus originated. Recent attacks come amid findings that Beijing appeared to cover up the true scale of the crisis, as the source of the outbreak remains a mystery. On Saturday, Donald Trump warned that China should face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for unleashing the coronavirus pandemic.

President Trump told reporters: "It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t, and the whole world is suffering because of it. “If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, then there should be consequences.

BILL AND MELINDA GATES DONATES EXTRA $150m TO FIGHT CORONAVIRUS

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated an extra $150m for the fight against COVID-19.

The foundation revealed this in a tweet shared through its official handle on Wednesday which brings its total commitment to the fight against the coronavirus disease to $250m.

“Today,” the tweet read, “we are committing an additional $150 million to our overall #COVID-19 response bringing our total commitment to more than $250 million.

In a statement on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s website, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mark Suzman described the coronavirus pandemic as a unique situation, assuring that the organization is in a position to help.

“This is a unique situation; we are in a unique position to help,” the statement added.

Suzman explained that “Even in an emergency like this, the starting point for how to use our resources is where it’s always been: Our fundamental belief that all lives have equal value.

“And since we know that epidemics hit the poorest and most vulnerable communities hardest, that’s where our funding is chiefly directed.”

Bill Gates had earlier faulted the United States’ halting of funding for the World Health Organization (WHO) and described the development as dangerous.

“Halting funding for the World Health Organization during a world health crisis is as dangerous as it sounds,” the businessman said.

The world, more than ever, needs the WHO which is helping to slow down the spread of COVID-19, according to Gates.

Nnamdi Kanu alleges China recorded 20 million deaths from COVID-19

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday, alleged that China recorded 20 million unreported deaths to the coronavirus pandemic.

He also alleged that what China is doing in Nigeria and Africa as a whole is experimentation of their vaccines to reduce Africa’s population. The IPOB leader, in a radio broadcast, text of which was made available to newsmen by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, took exception to Melinda Gates’ prediction of massive death in Africa due to coronavirus. Kanu alleged that Bill Gates family is working in tandem with China to reduce the population of Africa and Melinda Gates could not have made such callous and devastating prediction if she does not have information about the damaging effect of the virus.

His words: “Bill Gates family is working in tandem with China to reduce the population of Africa. That is why they did not see anything bad in trying the efficacy of their vaccine in Africa. It is unfortunate that Melinda Gates predicted that COVID-19 will be horrible in the developing world, claiming to have seen dead bodies on the streets of Africa, but could not see in America and Europe. “China does not mean well for Nigeria and the whole of Africa.

They should have vaccinated the whole of China, a country with more population rather than coming to Abuja and Africa.” Kanu, however, urged Biafrans to take their destiny in their hands by being their brothers’ keeper, adding that relying on what the Federal Government of Nigeria will do for them will be an exercise in futility. Kanu regretted the treatment being given Nigerians and Biafrans in China, alleging that it is because Nigerians see evil and keep quiet.

He added: “Nigerians, particularly Biafrans have no reasons to use the contaminated face masks produced in China because they are made to kill our people. Chinese are treating our people like rags in China and you say I should be diplomatic? It is better I die standing on my feet than live a thousand years on my knees.”

Sadly Mother loses entire family to Coronavirus

Woman loses entire family to Coronavirus as husband and son die within three days(photos) A woman from Michigan has lost her husband of 35 years and her son to Coronavirus within three days. Sandy Brown of Grand Blanc said she’s suffering from 'indescribable grief ' after losing her husband, Freddie Lee Brown Jr. and son Freddie Lee Brown III within a short period of time. ?????? “There’s not even a word created to describe my pain. It’s unimaginable,” she said. According to Detriot News, Sandy's husband fell sick in March, coming down with chills and muscle aches. The 59-year-old who had a kidney transplant began having trouble breathing and was admitted to Ascension Genesys Hospital, the outlet reported. He later tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on a ventilator. Few days later, Sandy received a call that his lung collapsed and to rush to the hospital, where she learned that doctors were unable to save him, according to the report.

When Nurses told her not to go into his hospital room, she insisted, putting on protective gear to say goodbye to her husband, the newspaper reported. “I’m going in that room,” she reportedly told them. “I don’t care what I have to do. I’ll sign whatever I need to sign.” The next day, her 20-year-old son, Freddie III, who had asthma became sick with a fever and a cough. Sandy took him to the same hospital, where his health improved before he began struggling to breathe, the outlet reported. Three days after her husband’s death, the heartbroken woman received the same call from the hospital asking her to quickly rush down to the hospital, where she was later informed that her son had also succumbed to the virus. “In three days, I lost my husband and son to an ugly plague,” Sandy told the newspaper. “I watched my son go from completely well and whole and happy to being gone in three days.”

Bill Gates wife Melinda warns of dead bodies in Africa

Melinda Gates has warned that there will be dead bodies littering the streets in African countries if the world does not act fast to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Ms Gates said this while speaking to CNN, on the novel Coronavirus and its effects in the third world countries. She said she is worried for Africa and fears that the continent might not be able to handle the devastating effect of COVID-19.

"Its going to be horrible in the developing world," she warned. “Part of the reasons you are seeing the case numbers still do not look very bad, is because they don’t have access to many tests. “Look at what is happening in Ecuador, they are putting bodies out on the streets, you are going to see that in countries in Africa,” Mrs Gates noted. Melinda Gates, who is also co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, fears things will get worst for Africa once cases peak because of poor health care systems and lack of humanitarian supports.

According to Ms Gates, her worst nightmare was when she “saw what China had to do to isolate enormous part of its population. My first thought was Africa. How in the world are they going to deal with this.” “I have been in townships all over Africa and slums. When we talk in country physical distancing and hand-washing, if you live in slums who can’t physical distance, you have to go out and get your meals. You don’t have clean water to wash your hands,” she added.

Lockdown in Lagos, Ogun, FCT Extended by 14 days says President Buhari

President Buhari has extended the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja by 2 weeks. He announced this during his speech this evening. He said; The increase in the number of States with positive cases is alarming. The National Centre for Disease Control has informed me that, a large proportion of new infections are now occurring in our communities, through person-to-person contacts. So we must pay attention to the danger of close contact between person to person.

At this point, I will remind all Nigerians to continue to take responsibility for the recommended measures to prevent transmission, including maintaining physical distancing, good personal hygiene and staying at home. In addition, I have signed the Quarantine Order in this regard and additional regulations to provide clarity in respect of the control measures for the COVID-19 pandemic which will be released soon.

The public health response to COVID-19 is built on our ability to detect, test and admit cases as well as trace all their contacts. While I note some appreciable progress, we can achieve a lot more. Today, the cessation of movement, physical distancing measures and the prohibition of mass gatherings remain the most efficient and effective way of reducing the transmission of the virus. By sustaining these measures, combined with extensive testing and contact tracing, we can take control and limit the spread of the disease. Our approach to the virus remains in 2 steps

– First, to protect the lives of our fellow Nigerians and residents living here and second, to preserve the livelihoods of workers and business owners. With this in mind and having carefully considered the briefings and Report from the Presidential Task Force and the various options offered, it has become necessary to extend the current restriction of movement in Lagos and Ogun States as well as the FCT for another 14 days effective from 11:59 pm on Monday, 13th of April, 2020. I am therefore once again asking you all to work with Government in this fight. This is not a joke. It is a matter of life and death. Mosques in Makkah and Madina have been closed.

The Pope celebrated Mass on an empty St. Peter’s Square. The famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris held Easter Mass with less than 10 people. India, Italy and France are in complete lockdown. Other countries are in the process of following suit. We can not be lax. The previously issued guidelines on exempted services shall remain. This is a difficult decision to take, but I am convinced that this is the right decision. The evidence is clear.
